Suspect killed by Denver police following alleged burglary in Montclair neighborhood

DENVER (KDVR) — The Denver Police Department says a suspect shot by police during an attempted carjacking after an alleged burglary died Monday evening.

Officials confirmed the person found dead outside the residence was the homeowner. A female was found shot inside the home and is in critical condition.

Police said two people were arrested after the suspected burglary in Denver’s Montclair neighborhood Monday afternoon.

Police were called for a burglary in progress around noon near the intersection of 10th Avenue and Monaco Parkway. The caller described the three suspects as black males who were driving a black Honda.

When police arrived they found one person dead and three people who they believed to be the suspects running away from the scene.

One of the suspects was arrested after a short foot chase. While taking that man into custody, Division Chief Ron Thomas said the officers heard gunshots and turned to see a second suspect who appeared to be trying to carjack someone in a burgundy Kia.

Officers at the scene engaged that suspect and fired their weapons. The suspect was hit and taken to a hospital for treatment.

The third suspect is believed to have gotten away in a vehicle, described as a 4-door black Honda sedan with a temporary license plate.

Hours after the burglary and shootings, Police were seen using K-9 units to gather evidence and a SWAT team was sweeping the property around the home.

It’s unclear the connection between the suspects and the victim and whether the house was targeted, but neighbors say a daylight burglary is shocking.

A robbery this time of year however, isn’t unheard of.

“There’s just more opportunity right now with the holiday come and gone,” said Dave Kritz, who lives just a few doors down from the burglary. “It reinstalls the fact we need to be careful and keep our doors locked.”

Police haven’t identified the person killed in the burglary or clarified if the victim was the owner of the home.
