DENVER (KDVR) — Two of Denver’s East Colfax nonprofit housing providers are reviving a local embargo on evictions.
Hope Communities and Rocky Mountain Communities are joining the East Colfax Community Collective, the East Colfax Neighborhood Association, and the COVID-19 Eviction Defense Project to temporarily ban evictions within their complexes.
The coalition said it will neither start nor continue evictions based on non-payment of rent as a result of the pandemic from Aug. 1-Dec. 31, as long as the tenant is in the process of submitting or has submitted an application for emergency rental assistance.
This comes after the announcement that the Federal Eviction Moratorium will be lifted on Sunday. The Hope Communities and Rocky Mountain Communities said they seek to protect residents from homelessness by created a local eviction moratorium.
Late Friday, Gov. Jared Polis signed an executive order allowing tenants with pending emergency assistance applications to avoid eviction, but the order expires next week.
Housing advocates say there needs to be more long-term solutions.
