HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (KDVR) — Denver Broncos cornerback Faion Hicks was arrested in South Florida over the weekend, according to police.

Hicks, 24, grew up in South Florida and was stopped by Hallandale Beach Police.

According to the arrest affidavit obtained by FOX31, Hicks was pulled over at around 7:36 p.m. on April 1 after an officer noticed he allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign.

The officer said he initiated a traffic stop, and when he approached Hicks’ car he smelled a strong odor similar to cannabis. However, Hicks allegedly told the officer, “There’s no weed in the car,” and then told the officer he had smoked a few days prior.

According to the arrest affidavit, Hicks did not have a medical marijuana card.

The officer said Hicks had two other passengers in the car at the time.

Due to the smell, the officer said he searched the vehicle and found the following:

  • Firearm under driver’s seat
  • Marijuana cigarette
  • Multi-colored foil baggies and elastic baggies containing cannabis

Officers said he was cited for disobeying a stop sign, driving with an expired license and carrying a concealed firearm without a permit. Due to the officer’s inability to determine who was the owner of the cannabis, no charge was given.

According to FOX31’s sister station WFLA in Florida, two days after Hick’s arrest on April 3, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill into law that would allow legal gun owners in the state to carry concealed firearms in public without a permit. However, that will not take effect until July 1.

Hicks was able to post bond and is no longer in custody in Hallandale Beach.

Hicks was selected by the Broncos in the seventh round of the 2021 draft. He played two games as a cornerback in the 2022 season.
