Wrong-way driver killed in crash on I-225 in Aurora

AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — The driver of a car that was believed to be going the wrong way on I-225 has died after a crash, police said.

According to Aurora Police Public Information Officer Matthew Longshore, the crash happened shortly after the driver got on the highway at East Iliff Avenue around 6:15 a.m. traveling south in the northbound lanes.

Police said the wrong-way vehicle was a Dodge Charger, but they have not identified the driver. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, police report.

Prior to crashing head-on with a Mazda SUV near South Parker Road, the Charger sideswiped a Chevrolet Silverado. The Silverado driver was uninjured but the Mazda driver was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
