AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — The driver of a car that was believed to be going the wrong way on I-225 has died after a crash, police said.

According to Aurora Police Public Information Officer Matthew Longshore, the crash happened shortly after the driver got on the highway at East Iliff Avenue around 6:15 a.m. traveling south in the northbound lanes.

Police said the wrong-way vehicle was a Dodge Charger, but they have not identified the driver. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, police report.

Prior to crashing head-on with a Mazda SUV near South Parker Road, the Charger sideswiped a Chevrolet Silverado. The Silverado driver was uninjured but the Mazda driver was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

An investigation continues and authorities ask anyone who may have witnessed this crash, has dash cam footage, or any information about this incident, to contact the Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720.913.STOP (7867).
