An earlier version of this story had an incorrect year for the last time Denver had a temperature as cold as Thursday morning. While there was a low of exactly -24 in 1989, National Weather Service records show there was a colder low of -25 in 1990.

DENVER (KDVR) — While Denver has its fair share of cold days every winter, the arctic cold front that moved into the state Wednesday afternoon is not a normal system. Temperatures dropped into the negative double digits recording a temperature not seen since 1990.

Whether you’re new to Colorado or have been here for decades, this is not a normal event. A Pinpoint Weather Alert Day has been issued for Thursday and Friday because of the extreme weather.

The Pinpoint Weather team said Denver would drop into subzero temperatures on Thursday. Denver International Airport hit a recorded low of 24 degrees below zero writing itself into the history books for the 8th coldest day in Denver.

According to the National Weather Service, the last time Denver was this cold was to the day back on Dec. 22, 1990. On that date 32 years ago, Denver hit negative 25 degrees.

The last time Denver was at negative 24 degrees was nearly 34 years ago on February 5, 1989.

Coldest recorded temperatures for Denver according to the National Weather Service

Temperatures continue to dip into the negative teens in Denver Thursday night with wind chills dipping back into the negative 20s across the Front Range. By the holiday weekend, the Pinpoint Weather team forecasts temperatures to heat back up into the 40s.

The arctic front is here to stay meaning Denver could hit other records. Only time will tell.
