JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said a 4-year-old boy died after a tree fell on him on Friday morning. 

The incident happened near Jay Way and Weaver Drive around 7:45 a.m.

A Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said that several kids were playing on a slackline or zipline when one of the trees it was tied to gave way and toppled over. 

“This really looks like nothing more than a very unfortunate accident. But these kids were just out playing on this either slack line or zip line when one of the two trees gave away,” said Jacki Kelley with the Jeffco Sheriff’s Office. “Think it’s been a tough morning for all the kids who were out playing because they were witness to the accident. So we have victim advocates out here and we have a team of investigators.”   

There were seven or eight kids in the backyard when the incident happened. Jefferson County investigators are trying to understand the circumstances of the incident but don’t believe anything was criminal.  

A 14-year-old girl was also hurt during the incident when neighbors said she tried to help the young boy. She was taken to the hospital with a leg injury.  

“All summer long, the kids are out on their bikes and stuff up and down the street, and all the kids from all these houses … all know each other and play together,” Jim Grendel said. 

Neighbors said most of the neighborhood kids get together often. 

The victim’s identification has not yet been released.  

The sheriff’s office said the 4-year-old is visiting from out of state.
