DENVER (KDVR) — One in 51 people in Colorado are contagious with COVID-19, as hospitalizations rise despite high vaccination rates across the state. State health leaders are not only concerned with the rise in cases and hospitalization, but the lack of beds available to care for people who need it.

The state currently has 1,296 COVID-19 hospitalizations, with only 815 beds available between acute care and ICU beds. The issue is bad enough that Colorado formally issued a statewide public health advisory because of the surge.

“Obviously these are incredibly concerning numbers and we’re working with our hospitals, we’re working with our combined hospital transfer center to make sure we use every bed available,” said Colorado Department of Health and Environment Incident Commander Scott Bookman.

If the issue persists, Gov. Polis has said Colorado will need to call on Federal Emergency Management Agency surge teams, halt elective surgeries and call on hospitals to once again resort to crisis standards of care.

This comes after President Joe Biden mandated anyone working for a company with 100 or more employees be vaccinated by Jan. 4 or provide a weekly negative COVID test.

The state recently announced it is purchasing 500,000 more Abbot BinaxNOW tests from eMed, as demand for at-home test kits in Colorado surges.
