BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office is warning drivers about rocks that have fallen either on or near the road in multiple locations across the county as another strong storm moves through.
The rain and cold weather are prompting rockslide warnings across the state. BCSO is asking drivers to be even more careful than usual because of falling rocks.
They are causing problems on mountain roads across the state. One of the latest slides took place near Evergreen where a boulder blocked half the roadway.
“Generally speaking, you want to start paying a little more attention when there is more moisture and more rain. That is when we start seeing a little bit of that dirt and mud that can loosen up and cause some of those rocks to fall and that other debris,” Colorado State Patrol Trooper Josh Lewis said.
State troopers tell FOX31 rockslides can take place almost anywhere with no warning signs.
Boulder County sent out its warning because of the number of slides taking place in just the past couple of days.
Rocks have been reported in these locations:
- Highway 7, mile marker 15
- Lefthand Canyon/Olde Stage
- Eldorado Springs Drive
- Highway 36 (North St. Vrain), mile marker 17
That was especially true along Boulder Canyon Road where the freezing temperatures, thawing and rain wreaked havoc on mountain sides.
“The big problem we are having is when there are rocks in the roadway and people driving too fast around corners and run into an unexpected obstruction in the roadway,” BCSO Commander Randy Wilber said.
Wilber is asking drivers to maneuver slowly around blind curves.
Motorists are also asked to leave plenty of room between you and other cars and watch for icy areas still hanging around even as warmer weather approaches.
No road closures have been reported.
