AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — Five Aurora police officers were involved in a shooting after following a stolen vehicle late Wednesday night, and the suspects are still on the run.
According to the Aurora Police Department, the incident began at around 9:45 p.m. when officers began to follow a stolen white Kia sedan. Police said the Kia was occupied by at least two suspects who pulled into a shopping center parking lot at East 6th Avenue and Peoria Street. The area is just north of Del Mar Park.
Police said that once the Kia stopped in the parking lot, one or more people in the vehicle began firing multiple rounds at two officers in an unmarked police car unprovoked.
Officers in the unmarked car began firing back.
According to police, the suspects attempted to flee the scene but were confronted by more officers who responded to the shots fired call. The suspects continued to fire shots at officers before leaving the parking lot.
In total, four police cars were struck by gunfire. According to APD, no officers were struck by the gunfire, however, one officer was taken to a local hospital for moderate injuries and was treated and released.

Officers began to search for the vehicle and located it unoccupied. The Kia had crashed at East 10th Avenue and Lima Street. The suspects were believed to be armed, and police sent a Reverse 911 for neighbors to stay inside as officers built a perimeter and began looking for the suspects.
The shelter-in-place was officially lifted at 6:35 a.m.
According to APD, a juvenile was found in a nearby field, investigators are working to determine if the juvenile had any involvement in the shooting. The juvenile was ultimately arrested on active warrants.
The search for the suspects is ongoing as of Thursday morning. APD is being assisted by the Aurora SWAT team, K-9s, and other law enforcement agencies.
APD said that in total, five APD officers fired their weapons and have been placed on administrative leave per department policy.
Police are urging anyone who has information or who sees something suspicious to call 911. The shopping center near the Kings Soopers will be closed until the large crime scene can be completely processed. Police ask everyone to avoid the area.
