Aurora police sergeant arrested for DUI in Denver

DENVER (KDVR) — An Aurora police officer was arrested on charges of driving under the influence on Monday in the Gateway/Green Valley Ranch neighborhood.

According to the Denver Police Department, 41-year-old Sergeant John Moreland was pulled over for failing to remain in a single lane in the 4400 block of N. Tower Road.

The arresting DPD officer said Moreland displayed signs of intoxication such as slurred speech and mumbling, imbalance, bloodshot/watery eyes and smelled of an unknown alcoholic beverage.

Moreland fled the scene on foot but returned a few minutes later, the arresting officer reported. He refused a chemical test at the scene.

Aurora Police released a short statement about Moreland’s arrest: “We will not be commenting on this case until it has been adjudicated in the courts and not until the completion of our Internal Affairs Investigation.”

Moreland has been with the APD since 2007 and is on paid administrative leave.

This is not the first time he’s been in trouble with the law because of alcohol.

In 2016, Arapahoe County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Moreland and accused him of being drunk and having a gun. At the time, his blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit.

Moreland took a plea deal in that case. It’s unclear if he faced disciplinary action for that incident.
