ARVADA, Colo. (KDVR) – While responding to a disturbance call early Sunday morning, Arvada Police Officer Dillon Michael Vakoff, 27, was killed in the line of duty.

According to the Arvada Police Department, the reported disturbance occurred on the 6700 block of West 51st Avenue.

Officers arrived at a chaotic scene early Sunday morning, and when they attempted to calm those present, shots were fired by a male suspect, who hit both a woman and Vakoff.

A second officer on scene performed life-saving measures before Vakoff was transported to Lutheran Hospital where he died from his injuries.

Officers and the suspect exchanged gunfire and the suspect was shot. He was taken to a local hospital where he is expected to survive. His identity has not been released by police, as of yet.

The female victim shot during the incident was transported to a nearby hospital and is expected to survive.

Chief Link Strate delivered a press conference at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday morning from the Arvada Police Department located at 8101 Ralston Rd. to address the killing of one of his officers.

A procession was led around 6 a.m. from Lutheran Hospital to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.
