AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — Two women were rescued by Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office deputies after accidentally driving their car into the Cherry Creek Reservoir.

The incident happened around 11 p.m. Saturday when the driver mistakenly went down a boat ramp on a foggy night. The car ended up in the Cherry Creek Reservoir and the women called 911 immediately.

You can hear in the dispatch call above that the women tell first responders they can’t leave the car because they don’t know how to swim.

When deputies arrived, they dove into the water to get the women to safety.

Rescuer recounts operation during low visibility

Deputy Riley Nolan vividly recalls that foggy night, as he put his body and badge in some murky water for a miraculous rescue.

“I can hear the people from the vehicle screaming out that they could use some help,” Nolan said.

All of this happened just after 11 p.m. Saturday when a woman accidentally drove down a boat ramp and into the Cherry Creek reservoir. The women were headed home from a wedding when they drove into the water at 30 miles per hour.

Nolan describes just how bad the visibility was.

“It almost looked like a foggy roadway on a fall day,” he said.

Nearby night fishers also called for help and even went in trying to help. But Nolan, a former lifeguard, jumped in, along with his colleagues.

“It’s one thing that I never thought would come into police work was lifeguarding, but I’m glad I had the training now,” he said.
