DENVER (KDVR) – Colorado Parks and Wildlife instituted a drawing-only system for Christmas tree cutting permits this year, a result of an overwhelming demand for Christmas trees.

There is just something about cutting your own Christmas tree that just feels good. This year Colorado Parks and Wildlife will allow 250 would-be Paul Bunyans to have that feeling.

“We saw such an increase in demand of people wanting to participate that that is why we had to develop a draw process so that it would be easy and fair,“ said Bridget O’Rourke, Colorado Parks and Wildlife Public Information Officer.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials said permit holders can visit the park on Dec. 4 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to choose and cut their tree.

Here’s how to apply:

If your application is successful, you will be notified by email the week of Nov. 16.

“The park rangers will be there to help them as well, but you would bring a saw, gloves, and protective gear,“ said O’Rourke.

Once you get the gear go to Golden Gate Canyon State Park, just north of Golden.

“You get to go and pick the tree that is unique, that speaks to you, you get to bring it home, you get to decorate it with your family,“ said O’Rourke.

The permit costs $35 each and Golden Gate Canyon State Park is the only place that is participating,

“It is such a cool experience because Christmas isn’t always about material things, it’s about unique experiences with the people you love,“ said O’Rourke.

And sometimes, it is good to get out all by yourself.
