VAIL, Colo. — Prosecutors say a man accused of stealing an SUV from a valet in Vail was at large from the state corrections system.

During 33-year-old Evan Reichert’s first court appearance Monday, Deputy District Attorney Johnny Lombardi said Reichert earned a six year sentence for a felony conviction in Eagle County but walked away after serving 26 days at a halfway house.

Reichert, of Denver, allegedly stole the SUV at knifepoint at the Vail Marriott Mountain Residences on Friday. Police say he crashed it into a fence at the neighboring hotel and ran back into the Marriott. That prompted a two-hour search which kept hotel guests in their rooms.

Reichert is being held for investigation of charges including attempted murder. The Vail Daily reports he told Judge Rachel Fresquez that he didn’t try to murder anyone.
