ARVADA, Colo. (KDVR) — Officer Dillon Vakoff with the Arvada Police Department was shot and killed Sunday morning in the line of duty while responding to a large family disturbance, the department said.

The shooting happened near 51st Avenue and Marshall Street before 2:30 a.m. when Vakoff arrived to a tumultuous situation with multiple people in the street.

Officers tried to separate several aggressive people and a suspect shot a woman and then started firing at the officers. Vakoff was shot, and the suspect was also shot.

The woman and suspect were taken to the hospital and are expected to survive.

Arvada Police Chief Link Strate said Vakoff was 27 years old and started with the department in 2019. He was a 2012 graduate of Ralston Valley High School and served six years in the Air Force where he held the rank of staff sergeant. Vakoff was training to be a SWAT officer, the department said.

“Dillon is an example of everything that is good about a police officer,” Strate said.

The suspect’s identity has not been released. A criminal investigation is underway.

A donation site has been set up for Vakoff by the Arvada Police Department.
