2 suspects use U-Haul truck to break into electric bike store in Denver

DENVER (KDVR) – Surveillance footage caught two suspects using a U-Haul truck to crash into the front windows of an electric bike store in Denver early Thursday morning.

It happened at eBikes USA near the corner of University Boulevard and 3rd Avenue, causing thousands of dollars in damage.

Video shows two suspects picking up glass to try and get to the bikes, before realizing they were locked up.

“The damages they caused made it very difficult for them to get any bikes,” owner Houshmand Moarefi said. “They couldn’t even pick up a bike, everything’s locked up, so they ended up abandoning and leaving.”

Moarefi said he arrived at the scene less than an hour later, after receiving a call from his security company.

“At first I was in shock, and then I honestly thought we were ruined, I thought this is it,” he said. “It looked like a bomb had gone off.”

While the suspects weren’t able to steal anything, Moarefi estimates they caused significant damage to at least 16 bikes.

The business is still waiting on insurance adjusters to see what will be covered.

He said right away, staff members, family members, and even nearby businesses chipped in to help board up the windows and clean up the debris.

“That means a lot to me, as a small business owner,” he said. “It really feels good to know that we have that type of support available.”

The store re-opened Saturday, after Moarefi turned over all of his video and photos to Denver Police. DPD has not released any suspect information, or any information on the U-Haul used in the crime.

“It’s amazing the way it looks now, and the way it looked then,” he said. I’m just grateful for the support we have.”
