Larimer County Dive Team trains to perform water rescues

Larimer County Dive Team practiced water rescues.

LARIMER COUNTY, Colo. — A 22-year-old man from Highlands Ranch died after falling off a cliff into Seaman Reservoir in Larimer County.

“It was a fairly remote area and we definitely had challenges. Every mission no matter how hard we train, every mission is different,” said Larimer County Dive Team Leader Mike Levy.

The man allegedly fell in the water just after 7 p.m. Friday.  The Larimer County Dive Team found his body more than an hour later.

The dive team was back in the water Saturday training in Long Pond Reservoir.

“It’s a skill that you lose if you don’t practice it,” said Levy.

On Saturday, they did a mock rescue.

“We put a dummy somewhere in the lake,” said Levy.

Levy said in real rescues, they generally have an hour to find a victim before it’s too late.

“You’ve got to move pretty quickly because by the time we get on scene, we’ve possibly lost half of that golden hour right there,” said Levy.

Their training on Saturday was successful.

“We did it in 61 minutes which is close enough. The victim probably would’ve survived,” said Levy.

With the weather warming up and families heading to the water, Levy said they’re ready if anyone gets in trouble.

“You know you can do it because you’ve trained for it,” said Levy.
