DENVER — A juvenile male suspect was been taken into custody for investigation of first-degree murder in the case of a taxi driver shot and killed earlier this month, the Denver Police Department said Thursday.

Metro Taxi driver Darren Bloomquist, 49, was shot and killed inside his cab around 4:35 a.m. on Sept. 5 after receiving a call to pick up a fare at 20000 E. Mitchell Place in the Green Valley Ranch neighborhood, police said.

Police did not provide the identity of the juvenile arrested or any information on which the arrest was based.

The crime left a disabled widow unable to care for herself. Bloomquist had been moonlighting as a driver to help pay the bills.

A fundraiser was established by Bloomquist’s coworkers at Metro Taxi to provide for his widow. Oakwood Homes, a company headquartered in Green Valley Ranch where the death happened, said it will match donations to Bloomquist’s family, up to $10,000.

News of the arrest comes one day before a memorial service scheduled for Bloomquist. It will take place at Metro Taxi headquarters at 5909 E. 38th Ave. on Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will be open to the public.
