Arturo Hernandez Garcia finds sanctuary in Denver church

DENVER — The family of a man taking sanctuary in a Denver church traveled to Washington, D.C. to fight his deportation.

Arturo Hernandez Garcia has been living at First Unitarian Church since October 21.

He brought his family to the U.S. in 1999 on a 6-month tourist visa. But, they decided to stay.

Garcia was arrested in 2010 on an unrelated charge and that changed his immigration status.

Officers told him to leave the country by October 21st of this year.

A church officials says there is a policy with the immigration and customs enforcement that they will not come on to a church or school property to arrest someone for deportation.

His wife and two daughters went to Washington. They expect to meet with members of Colorado’s congressional delegation Wednesday to try to save him from being deported.
