DENVER — The Lone Tree Police Department will begin enforcing the proper use of an Interstate 25 lane dedicated for through traffic only on Thursday, the Colorado Department of Transportation announced.

CDOT launched a pilot program Monday on southbound I-25 that designates a single lane for through traffic only from Dry Creek Road to past Lincoln Avenue.

Officers will be on hand Thursday to ensure motorists do not cross the double white lines intended to restrict drivers from weaving in and out of traffic, CDOT said.

White and black signs as well as message boards have been installed along the highway to reiterate that crossing over the double white lines to enter or exit the direct lane is not permitted.

CDOT said the goal of the program is to improve traffic flow and reduce car congestion during rush-hour times.

An assessment on the direct lane and its effectiveness will continue for several weeks. During this time, CDOT will monitor traffic flow and patterns to evaluate if the lane improves conditions during peak travel times.
