Hot, dry, windy weather perfect recipe for fires in eastern Colorado

Fire near Agate, Colorado

DENVER — From the prairie to the suburbs, no part of Colorado was safe Tuesday from Mother Nature’s fury.

Several fires across the state quickly spread thanks to strong winds, hot temperatures and continuing dry conditions.

Agate grass fire

A grass fire near Agate burned about 1,500 acres before firefighters and farmers were able to contain it and put it out.

It ultimately burned up to Interstate 70 in Elbert County.

Fire in Falcon

A grass fire near Falcon outside of Colorado Springs burned about 2 1/2 acres.

Fire damages two homes in Parker

In Parker a house fire quickly became more dangerous when the strong winds helped it spread to a home next door.

A woman named Kelli who lives across the street said someone walking their dog started pounding on her door, asking her to call 911.

“I could hear a ‘wooshing’ sound and lots of popping,” Kelli said of the fire. “I could see the flames between the two houses.

“The one neighbor who’s house got the most damage, he got out of the house without his shoes on, without his cellphone. He got his animals out and moved his vehicle and did the right thing.”

“Whenever it’s hot and a fire starts, it can move to the other house. This is probably the third or fourth fire I’ve been on where it has spread from one house to another,” said Becky O’Guin, with South Metro Fire.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. It caused thousands of dollars in damage.
