LARIMER COUNTY, Colo. — After burning 87,284 acres and raging for just over three weeks, the High Park Fire was 100-percent contained Sunday night.

All evacuations were lifted on June 30, and the amount of homes destroyed has been tallied at 259, though authorities said that number “may still increase as assessments are completed.”

Highway 14 has also been reopened.

“Fire crews are patrolling the fire perimeter,” Incident Commander Ken Paul said in a release. “They will be mopping up hotspots near the edge of the fire perimeter and conducting fire line rehabilitation — including chipping up fire line debris and slash and installing water bars to help prevent erosion.”

Paul said the second largest fire in the history of the state “continues to smoulder” and that smoke will be seen and smelled for “several weeks” as Mother Nature takes care of putting out the last bits of the blaze.
