COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — A fundraiser involving running and walking benefited St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Saturday in Commerce City.

The annual St. Jude Walk/Run to end childhood cancer took place at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

An estimated 2,000 people participated.

The event is St Jude’s biggest fundraiser of the year in Colorado, helping the hospital treat childhood cancer patients for free.

Every year, childhood cancer survivors like Jessie Wagner share their emotional stories at the event.

Wagner was just 6 months old when she was diagnosed with kidney cancer.

“My parents, as you can imagine, were petrified,” she says. “I don’t remember it, thankfully, but they walked into St. Jude and really what they said was, ‘You’re here, we want to take care of your daughter, we’ll deal with the insurance [and] paperwork later.'”

Wagner was diagnosed with a completely different kind of cancer when she was 16, and again returned to St. Jude for treatment. Now cancer-free, she shares her story in hopes of convincing others to donate to St. Jude.

“As a survivor, this is really inspiring,” she says. “It’s amazing to see the number of people who are willing to support a hospital that’s in Tennessee. But the great thing about St. Jude, is they share their research freely so people right here in Denver can be impacted by what’s going on in Memphis.”

The event raised more than $184,000 to fund cancer research.
