DENVER — Health officials are saying this year’s flu vaccination will be much more effective than in years past.

Last season, the flu bug hit hard. Some of the viral strains had mutated, so even many of those that were vaccinated got sick. So the flu shot has been redesigned for the 2015-16 season.

There are two new strains in this year’s flu shot, so experts say the vaccine will be much more effective.

“The flu mutates or changes, and that’s why you need to receive your flu shot every year,” Adria Zimmer of the Colorado Visiting Nurse Association said.

There is more than one way to receive your flu immunization. You can use the traditional flu shot with a needle, or if you’re healthy and between the ages of 2-46, you might choose the nasal flu mist.

“The CDC doesn’t recommend one type of administration over another,” Zimmer said.

So you have options, and experts say it’s important for your health and those around you.

“You want that annual protection based on the flu that’s circulating, but also because you’re protecting the rest of the community,” Zimmer said.

The CDC website makes it easy to find a vaccination location near you.
