BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. — A 81-year-old woman died after catching West Nile Virus, officials in Boulder County said Monday.

The Lafayette woman was hospitalized on Sept. 20 after she reported feeling a fever, confusion and dizziness, said Chana Goussetis of Boulder County Public Health.

“Our heart goes out to this family,” said Lane Drager, Boulder County Public Health Consumer Protection Program Coordinator. “While the mosquito season is over until next spring, this news highlights the seriousness of this disease and why it’s so important for us to monitor mosquito activity and take action. Without our proactive actions this year there would very likely have been more disease in our community.”

As of Oct. 29, 303 people in Colorado have contracted West Nile. Fifty got the virus in Boulder County.

West Nile Virus is most often spread through mosquitoes.

Goussetis said the season for mosquitoes is from late April to mid-September (or the first freeze of fall).
