DENVER — A Denver firefighter was injured while fighting a grass fire in the eastern part of the metro area Monday afternoon, according to a spokeswoman with the Aurora Fire Department. The firefighter’s injury was described as minor.
The call for the grass fire near Common Ground Golf Course came just after 4 p.m.
There were a number of apartment buildings in the area. The Denver and Aurora fire departments responded and extinguished the flames in coordinated attacks. No buildings were threatened.
Smoke caused a problem for drivers as the evening commute began so police closed westbound Alameda Avenue at South Dayton Street while firefighters worked to control the flames.
The fire was under control and crews were mopping up around 5 p.m. after about 2 1/2 acres burned.
Unseasonably warm, windy and dry conditions have made conditions favorable for these types of fires. Fire officials said everyone needs to make sure any fires are controlled and they need to be careful of cigarettes.
