Firefighters rescue dog that fell 50 feet into abandoned mine

A dog that fell 50 feet into a mine was rescued Saturday, April 9, 2016.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — Firefighters rescued a dog out of a mine south of Chatfield Reservoir on Saturday afternoon.

West Metro Fire rescue was called out to the mine off Jared Way. A hiker called 911 after hearing the dog barking in the area, firefighters said.

The dog was about 50 feet down the clay mine. Firefighters were able to carry him out with only minor injuries.

Firefighters said dog rescues in abandoned mines in the area are a somewhat routine call.
