DENVER — Two people were injured and five were detained after a brawl on the 16th Street Mall on Thursday night, the Denver Police Department said.

Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said a couple was eating dinner outside a restaurant in the area of 16th and Arapahoe streets when words were exchanged with a group of other people. He said the verbal altercation escalated to a fight where the man was beaten up.

Several people from nearby restaurants came to try to break up the brawl. One person who tried to help was cut in the head by a box cutter and then taken to a hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.

Part of Skyline Park was blocked off by crime scene tape while police interviewed witnesses.

Police initially said five people were arrested at 16th and Wazee streets but Friday morning said they were only detained.

After the incident, a cell phone and ID were still missing Friday.

The incident remains under investigation.
