DENVER — For Jerry Jaramillo, painting has been a way of life. He has painted more than 40 murals mainly in west and north Denver. His themes, deal primarily with Hispanic heroes and mythical figures.

Currently, he and his son, Jay Michael Jaramillo, who calls himself an artrepreneur, are just finishing up the “Mother Earth” mural on West 41st Avenue and Tejon Street.

This mural was painted in 1980. He had help on this one with his 1980 art class and for the past 30 years the image has been fading away. But now, the father and son team are making it new again.

“This Mother Earth image represents the elements: Earth, wind, fire and water. … It reflects the birth of the universe and with the baby inside the moon. … We get it, very ’70s Jerry. Sun signs and all.”

Father and son say this work is in their blood. Jay just graduated from Metro State University with a bachelor’s degree. He hopes to take the mural business to the next level, with all of the help he has received from his father.

“I am ready to pick up the brushes he once used to help tell stories and share legends from our culture,” Jay Michael said.

One of their other murals, Primavera, was removed from a building across Tejon from Mother Earth. But now the Bronco Stop Bar wants the springtime mural on its Broncos watering hole. That work will begin in a few weeks.
