ARVADA, Colo. — A mother was grieving Monday as police tried to track down the person who hit and killed her son in Arvada.
“He was my life,” Carol Renick said.
Renick takes pride in her garden. It’s where she and her only child, 61-year-old Lee Chandler, spent most of their time together.
“He helped me out in the yard and say, ‘Well, Mom I think this would look good here,’” she said.
But now, she’ll garden alone.
“There’s no explaining when your child dies and especially in that manner,” Renick said.
Police said the driver in a Honda Accord hit Chandler as he was crossing Sheridan Boulevard at West 82nd Avenue just before 9 p.m. Sunday. The driver didn’t stop, but left behind the driver’s side window.
“I drove past it three times this morning. I see their marks and everything,” Renick said.
Renick said Chandler worked as a construction worker before going on disability two years ago. She mourned the loss of the son she had at a young age.
“I and he grew up together. We literally grew up together,” she said. “They took everything away from me. I spent my life raising him.”
She also has a message for the person behind the wheel.
“You have no business out there driving anything if you don’t have sense enough or the decency to stop when you kill a person,” Renick said.
Police were looking for a dark green Honda Accord with front end damage. It was missing the driver’s side window. Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Alan Stephens at 720-898-6711 or Det. Bob Vander Veen at 720-898-6666.
