LIMON, Colo. — A Limon man has been charged with killing his wife, the Castle Rock Police Department announced Wednesday.
The incident happened in Castle Rock last weekend. Police have not identified the victim but friends and family say it’s Kirsten Lockett.
Lockett’s estranged husband, Richard Lockett, 44, is accused of stabbing his wife. His mugshot shows severe slash wounds to his neck and police said Richard Lockett tried to take his own life after allegedly killing his wife.
Kirsten Lockett is the mother of six children. They lived together in Limon.
On Wednesday, Kirsten Lockett would have celebrated her 37th birthday. To honor her life, the community of Limon came together and strung dozens of balloons along the fence line of her property. The balloons stretched a half-a-mile.
“I wish we could have showed her this before [her death] happened,” said Lisa Walsh, a close friend. “I don’t think she knew to the extent that we really loved her and how important she was to us.”
Lockett was well-known in the community for baking homemade cakes.
“She was a big part of making everyone smile in our town,” Walsh said.
But behind her smile was a tragic tale involving abuse. In the past couple of weeks, Lockett’s friends said they learned what she had been going through. They weren’t sure how serious it was, but now wish they would’ve done more.
