Driver arrested in death of trooper is retired Army colonel

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. — The driver suspected of fatally hitting a Colorado State Patrol trooper on Interstate 25 south of Castle Rock on Sunday night is a retired Army colonel, according to records.

Eric Henderson, 52, was booked into the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Detention Facility just before 7 a.m. Monday on investigation of vehicular homicide, failure to remain at the scene of a deadly accident, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and careless driving causing death.

Henderson, who lives in Peyton, was being held on $1 million bond, according to Douglas County records.

On Sunday just before 9 p.m., trooper Jaimie Jursevics, 33, was hit while investigating a crash on southbound Interstate 25 near mile marker 175. A fund has been set up to help take care of the family of the young wife and mother.

Henderson was a colonel with the the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command. He retired in June 2013 and was honored during a ceremony at The Club on Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs.

“Henderson is the type of person that people want to follow,” Army Brig. Gen Kurt Story, a former deputy commander of the Joint Functional Component Command for Space, U.S. Strategic Command, said of Henderson then.

“A leader has a responsibility to the group, and Eric never loses sight of that. A leader has a responsibility to himself, and Eric doesn’t ever lose sight of that. A leader has a responsibility to the community — in this case the larger Army enterprise — our nation. Eric never lost sight of that. And lastly a leader has an obligation to ethics and morality — to our code, and Eric never lost sight of that.

“Eric is a great American. I’m proud of him, and proud to have served with him.”

Henderson was presented with the Legion of Merit for his service in the command.

Henderson is due in court Tuesday.
