GOLDEN, Colo. — As Florida braces for Hurricane Irma, Texas is still in recovery mode after Hurricane Harvey ravaged Houston.
Not only did it displace thousands of people, but sheltered pets are being sent out of the city to make room for all of the lost and displaced animals.
Many of them are being brought to Colorado and some will be put up for adoption on Saturday.
HomeComings Dog Rescue took three trips to Texas this week to pull stranded or abandoned dogs from the waters, bringing in 34 dogs, including 11 late Thursday night.
The group focused on dogs who were already at shelters and were set to be euthanized.
“We got as many dogs out as we could and they would not be here right now if we hadn’t have gotten them,” HomeComings Dog Rescue executive director Deborah Hill said.
“And they’re great dogs. Every single one of them most are under 3 years old. We have puppies. Quite a few puppies.”
Some of the dogs will be held in foster care and some will be available for adoption.
“The one thing we need terribly is fosters,” Hill said. “We are a foster-based organization. We don’t have a shelter so we rely on fosters to be the heroes in that picture and give the dogs TLC until they are adopted.”
The adoption event will take place at Golden Pet Supplies Plus (17205 S. Golden Road in Golden) from noon to 4 p.m Saturday.
A GoFundMe account has been established to address the medical needs of the rescued dogs. Some of the donations needed include collars and leashes, blankets, and food.
The organization’s website has a list of dogs up for adoption.
Other rescues are still doing transports and they expect to bring in more dogs in the coming months.
