LOVELAND, Colo. — A detective with the Loveland Police Department was placed on leave after being charged with a felony by a neighboring district attorney.

Brian Koopman, a long-serving detective with the department, is charged with a Class 4 felony of attempting to influence a public servant.

A source with information on the investigation described the case as involving a Larimer County judge. In a news release Wednesday, the Loveland Police Department declined to comment because of the ongoing criminal case.

A Loveland city councilman, who has been urging for an in-depth investigation for months, issued his appreciation to the Weld County District Attorney’s Office for investigating the matter.

“How many citizens’ civil rights have to be violated before the department’s leadership notices and does something,” Troy Krenning said.

FOX31 attempted to reach Koopman but neither a phone call nor a request for comment at his Loveland home provided any information.
