Denver speak-easy ranked as seventh best bar in the world

Green Russell in Denver

DENVER — Not all bars are created equal.  Some are OK, some are good and some are great.

And there is a bar in Denver that’s rated No. 7 out of the world’s top 30 watering holes, according to the upscale travel magazine Conde Nast Traveler.

Green Russell is a belo- ground bar located on Larimer Street in Larimer Square. They call it a speak-easy.

Speak-easys were popular during Prohibition starting in 1920. Liquor of any kind, for any reason, was made illegal so people who were thirsty would quench their desires at their local friendly and not-so-legal speak-easy.

Green Russell bartender and co-owner Adam Hodak said first and foremost the cocktails have to be just about perfect.

“We use high-end spirits, fresh juices and beautiful ice to create really really aesthetically as well as delightfully tasting cocktails,” he said.

Green Russell’s approach to libations is a labor of love.

“You pick a type of cocktail or a style of spirit, we talk flavor profile and then craft cocktails for you,” Hodak said.

In addition to hand-crafted cocktails, the speak-easy style atmosphere at Green Russel is like the olive in your martini, a perfect combination.
