DENVER — RTD general manager Phil Washington is leaving Denver’s transit agency — and possibly Denver entirely.

The Denver Business Journal confirmed early Wednesday that Washington plans to leave the agency. Meanwhile, L.A. Observed reported that Washington will be announced as the incoming CEO of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority on Thursday.

RTD has not yet said why Washington is stepping down, except to say that he is leaving by choice. Likewise, L.A. Metro authorities declined to confirm that Washington was their final pick for the open CEO position.

Washington has led RTD since 2009, and worked at the agency for 16 years. It’s not yet clear who will replace him, or when he will officially turn over the helm.
