DENVER (KDVR) — A plainclothes Denver police officer was shot on Tuesday evening and a suspect was soon taken into custody.

In a press conference Tuesday evening, police said the incident started around 4:04 p.m., when officers responded to the area of South Knox Court and West Kentucky Avenue over a dog dispute, according to Division Chief Joe Montoya. The officers were on “civil standby” to monitor for any issues.

Police were called back to the same location at 5:24 p.m. on reports of someone who was possibly armed and trying to enter a home. The plainclothes officer arrived to scout the area around 5:35 p.m. and was shot.

Nearby police officers identified a suspect car and, after a short pursuit, stopped the vehicle near West Center Avenue and Irving Street. A suspect was arrested and taken into custody.

Police were not looking for any further suspects.

Police Chief Paul Pazen said the officer, a man, was shot in the back and was not wearing a protective vest at the time of the shooting.

“We are very fortunate that our officer is still with us,” Pazen said. The officer was expected to make a full recovery.

Montoya said the bullet did not penetrate the officer but did leave “significant injury.”

The officer has been on the job for four years, Pazen said.

The officer was working as part of the department’s Impact Team. Montoya said the unit is “a very versatile unit” that does whatever the commander needs, whether it’s covert operations or high-visibility patrol.

Sources said the officer was at Denver Health. FOX31 saw Pazen leaving the hospital before he addressed the media at a press conference after 7:30 p.m.
