Here are 10 things to know for Tuesday, November 12, 2013:
1. Fire crews use jaws of life to rescue driver
Crews worked quickly to rescue a party that was trapped inside a vehicle after an early morning rollover Tuesday. The car flipped over at 11th and Bannock after 6 a.m, forcing the intersection to shut down. One person was seen being taken to the hospital in an ambulance.
2. School bus collides with pickup truck in Yuma County
Six people were injured after a school bus collided with a pickup truck in eastern Colorado Monday evening.
The Wray School District bus rolled over once and came to rest on its wheels, according to Colorado State Patrol. The female drivers of both vehicles and one of the students had serious injuries. The other three students on the bus had minor injuries. All were expected to recover.
3. FOX31 Investigation: Hundreds of sex offenders in Colorado schools
FOX31 went through hundreds of records and found a little more than 300 offenders, 17 and younger, who were required to register as sex offenders at schools across Colorado. The highest number was in the Adams 12 Five Star School District with 43 in the last school year (2012-2013), followed by Jefferson County schools with 25 and Cherry Creek with 23. 4. Typhoon Haiyan creates health crisis in Philippines
The unprecedented natural disaster that came in the form of Typhoon Haiyan is a potential medical disaster for the Philippines, according to emergency crews on the ground.
The Red Cross says it has ordered 10,000 body bags in preparation for the number of bodies it believes it will have to retrieve. The official death toll, currently in the hundreds, is likely to grow quickly as rescue crews are better able to assess the situation.
5. Thieves steal puppies from Northglenn pet shop
A pair of thieves stole three puppies from a pet store on Thursday before bumping a witness with their car as they fled the scene, Northglenn police said.
Two men entered Puppies ‘n’ Stuff at 1400 West 104th St., grabbed two white Maltese and one male German Shepherd puppy, and ran, police reported.
6. Loophole allows TV advertising of E-cigarettes
A loophole allows TV advertising of E-cigarettes, and some in Congress want the Food and Drug Administration to step in and regulate E-cigarette advertising just like tobacco. Some of the criticism indicates the ads are targeting children.
7. Colorado Springs cop in DUI crash charged with stealing blood sample
A Colorado Springs police officer who is accused in a drunk driving crash, now faces even more serious charges. Investigators say officer David Rosenoff stole the blood sample he gave after he was arrested.
8. CU Boulder combats party-school image
The University of Colorado Boulder has been known as one of the nation’s top party schools for years, but the college is trying to change that image through a new marketing campaign.
The school is launching a new branding effort called “Be Boulder,” which will debut in December. The campaign aims to focus the public’s perception of the university on the school’s researchers, astronauts and entrepreneurs.
9. Peyton Manning OK to play Sunday
The Denver Broncos QB’s MRI showed no “new damage” following Sunday’s hard hit against the Chargers. Manning was limping during the final minutes of Sunday’s game after taking a low hit from San Diego defensive end Corey Liuget, but is expected to play against the 9-0 Kansas City Chiefs this weekend.
10. CU Denver student uses ‘Art of War’ to treat PTSD
A full-time Fine Arts student at CU Denver started what he calls the “Art of War Project.” He’s helping fellow service-members realize the therapeutic qualities of art at monthly classes, held at a place called Hope Tank on South Broadway in Denver.
