HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. – In an area where people are used to dealing with coyotes, wildlife officials are offering reminders to residents to be careful of their surroundings.
After several days of warm weather, more people are spending time outside which is also occurring at the same time as coyote mating season.
“If you live in those areas near open space or near the foothills, you definitely want to keep an eye on your animals,” said a spokesperson for the Colorado Department of Parks and Wildlife. There have been no recent reports of coyotes attacking humans or pets but experts stressed the need to be mindful of surroundings.
The department offers tips to protect both pets and people:
- Do not run or turn your back
- Be as big and loud as possible
- Wave your arms and throw objects
- Face the coyote and back away slowly
- If attacked, fight back
