GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo. (KDVR) — The Greenwood Village Police Department is investigating after the Tri-County Health Department received an email threatening “civil war.”

GVPD confirmed the email Wednesday afternoon.

Tri-County Health oversees Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties.

According to police, a receptionist with the health department received the email Tuesday afternoon. It said, “Tell the nine petty tyrants who want to keep locking most of Colorado down to F*** off.”

The email was likely referring to the nine members who make up the health department’s board.

Last month, Tri-County Health extended the stay-at-home order for Adams and Arapahoe counties through May 8, but allowed Douglas County to partially reopen on April 27.

Police say the email also said, “We the people are DONE with this f***ing bulls***, and you are about to start a hot-shooting, no-bulls*** civil war. END. THE LOCKDOWN. NOW. Or face severe consequences.”

GVPD has not yet named a suspect.

The department said the sender will likely not be charged with a crime, as “the email is written as a general statement, and not as a direct threat.” 

Police have increased patrols outside the health department’s headquarters in the Denver Tech Center portion of Greenwood Village.

Dr. John Douglas with Tri-County Health says it’s not the first angry email they’ve received, but he says the target was upsetting. 

“I was disappointed because it was directed toward my board,” he said. “You know, these are volunteers, they work hard and don’t get paid, and frankly, it was hostile and threatening.”

Douglas says he hopes the person was simply blowing off steam, and says you can’t be too careful in today’s world. 

“Any time you get a threat like that, you wonder,” he said. “We’re in a challenging time, the epidemic is stressing mental health, it’s stressing economic health, it’s creating social isolation. So yeah, you wonder if someone is going to go beyond venting and blow a fuse.”

Douglas also says at the end of the day, his department is simply looking to keep Arapahoe, Adams, and Douglas counties safe and healthy.

“I’d like for even the angriest of people to understand that and try to work with us,” he said.

Tri-County Health was also the victim of repeated vandalism over the past month, according to Aurora police.

Police say they’ve received four complaints of vandalism at a satellite office at 15192 E. Hampden Ave. Windows were reportedly broken, with hateful messages spray painted outside. 

Police are offering a reward through Metro Denver Crime Stoppers for information leading to an arrest.

During a press conference Wednesday, Gov. Jared Polis said he’s fine with free speech, but his goal is to help protect everyone from the coronavirus, especially in stores.

“Threatening a civil war over decals on the floor of the store that tell you where to stand in the take-out line is really offensive to anyone who enjoys the freedom or liberty that we enjoy in this country,” Polis said.
