DENVER (KDVR) — Colorado Gov. Jared Polis released a racial breakdown of COVID-19 cases in Colorado on Monday.
For weeks, Colorado was not releasing the data despite other states providing it to the public.
White Coloradans make up the large percentage of cases and deaths, but they also make up the majority of the population.
According to the state, non-Hispanic whites make up 67.8% of Colorado’s population. Whites account for 59.1% of COVID-19 cases and 69.1% of COVID-19 deaths.
Cases among African Americans and Hispanics, however, do outnumber their respective populations in the state.
Hispanics comprise 21.7% of Colorado’s population. They account for 28.1% of COVID-19 cases and 17.7% of COVID-19 deaths.
African Americans represent 3.9% of Colorado’s population. They make up 7.0% of COVID-19 cases and 6.8% of COVID-19 deaths.
Polis said on Monday socioeconomic factors likely play a major role in the spread of the virus.
