CU Denver addresses discrimination, harassment toward people of Asian descent

DENVER (KDVR) – The University of Colorado Denver is addressing discrimination and harassment directed toward students, faculty and staff perceived to be of Asian descent amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The university says that while some students have been facing more discrimination and harassment in the community, but not on campus.

In a statement sent out March 27, CU Denver Chancellor Dorothy Horrell said, “It is important for all of us to reject anti-Asian discrimination and harassment, even as represented in the guise of people expressing fear of COVID-19.”

What can you do to help?

What the university says it is doing to address the problem:

Horrell called for community support, stating, “We are grateful to be part of a university community that is known for stepping up to help and support others in times of crisis. In these moments of shared fear and anxiety, we must each do our part to preserve and spread the values CU Denver holds dear: respect, civility and inclusion. Let’s keep our community a community.”

Correction: An earlier version of this story stated there was an increase in reports of people discriminating against and harassing Asian people at CU Denver. The university says that while students have faced these problems, they did not occur on campus or by members of the campus community.
