DENVER — Members of the community rallied in Denver Thursday evening to remember 17-year-old Jessie Hernandez near the alley where she died.

Denver police officers shot the teen last month during a confrontation when she was behind the wheel of a stolen car.

The group’s message was that they’re tire of what they call a pattern of excessive force by Denver police.

The vigil came as a new plea was made urging the U.S. Department of Justice to take action in the girl’s death. A petition with thousands of signatures was brought to the department demanding a federal investigation of the Denver Police Department.
