Colorado Springs teen talks about losing arm in shark attack on North Carolina beach

WILMINGTON, N.C. — Sixteen-year-old Hunter Treschel of Colorado Springs was in good condition Tuesday night after he lost an arm in a shark attack on a North Carolina beach Sunday. Tuesday night, the hospital where he was receiving treatment posted videos of him talking about his experience to YouTube.

“I felt it hit me on the left leg, like a big fish kind of hit you or something, then I felt it one more time, then it hit my arm. That was the first time I saw it, when it was biting up my left arm. Then he got that off eventually. I don’t know if he swam away, but I was able to move. With the help of my cousin, I made it up onto the beach,” Treschel said.

A 13-year-old girl was also attacked in the same area on Oak Island about 90 minutes earlier.

Both victims were airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington. Both arrived in critical condition, according to hospital spokeswoman Martha Harlan.

Harlan said each had an arm amputated — his left arm below the shoulder, hers at the elbow.
