Colorado mom says dead pig’s face put in daughter’s backpack was bullying

Pig's face found in child's backpack

DELTA, Colo. — A 6th grader in Delta on Colorado’s Western Slope said she found the face of a dead pig inside her backpack. Her mom now says the school isn’t doing anything about it.

Shelby Cady, 12, found the face in the backpack Thursday.

At first she thought it was a friend playing a trick on her. But now she believes it’s a bully’s work. Shelby said she’s been the target of bullying since she moved to Delta from Arkansas.

“They call me Arkan-sass, and they call me polar bear killer ’cause I wore this really fluffy coat,” Shelby said.

Her mother, Robin Earnest, went to school administrators who disagreed with her assessment. “I consider something like that bullying. And they said it’s not, so we need to define what bullying is in our schools so our children can be protected.”

The Delta County School District superintendent refused to conduct an on-camera interview about this situation. But he did say that he doesn’t think the act was malicious.
