DENVER (KDVR) — Colorado’s nine electors met at the state capitol Monday to cast their votes for president and vice president.
All of the electors followed the states guidelines to support the winner of the popular vote in the state, casting their ballots for Joe Biden as president and Kamala Harris as vice president.
Nationwide electors are undergoing the same process. Biden is expected to receive 306 of the electoral votes.
Previously there have been electors who voted against the will of their state. These “unfaithful electors” were a larger part of the conversation after the 2016 election.
With Coloradans voting to join the national popular vote compact this past November, electors FOX31 spoke with are hoping this part of the process will eventually be a thing of the past.
“I would be delighted if we do away with the Electoral College,” said fourth-year elector and former state senator Polly Baca.
“The Electoral College is fundamentally undemocratic, has racist roots, and ultimately should be abolished. That said, it’s the system that’s in place for this election and we are going to elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris today,” said first-time elector Alan Kennedy.
Baca and Kennedy both said the president’s refusal to concede made their vote more critical than ever.
