DENVER — A Longmont man has been fined $100,000 for selling Spice — a synthetic drug taken for a high that is illegal in Colorado.
The fine is the largest ever imposed on a store for selling Spice, said Carolyn A. Tyler, a spokeswoman for the Attorney General’s Office.
Sang Leaming, who owns the Tobacco King in Longmont, was arrested last year when undercover investigators found the store was selling Spice.
“Tobacco King sold products that were deceptively labeled and failed to disclose that they were illegal as well as harmful,” Tyler said.
Investigators seized 1,049 containers of Spice products from Tobacco King, she said, and the AG filed a lawsuit against Leaming.
The lawsuit was one of four filed over the past year by the Attorney General’s office against storeowners who sold Spice, Tyler said.
“Spice is a dangerous, volatile drug that is illegal despite the claims of many store owners that it is not,” said Suthers in a statement. “My office will continue working with our law enforcement partners and the retail industry to remove spice from store shelves and prosecute peddlers of these products.”
