DENVER — More than 400,000 people are expected to converge into Denver for Cinco de Mayo celebrations this weekend.

Road closures were already in place around Civic Center Park Friday night.

Expect heavy traffic around the park, downtown, and along Federal Boulevard.

Denver Police say the annual celebration brings spontaneous cruising along Federal resulting in severe disruption to normal traffic patterns.

“We’re saying come down. It’s a great time,” said Sonny Jackson, Denver Police spokesman. “It has gone on really well the last few years.

For Veronica Gallegos-Aguilar, cars and the annual is holiday is family tradition.

“It’s not just my husband taking off with the guys doing his own thing,” said Gallegos-Aguilar. “It includes my boys and me. This one weekend that’s committed just to Latinos and to the Hispanic hertitage.”

Heavy traffic on Federal Boulevard is expected through Tuesday evening. Traffic will be allowed to cross Federal freely until traffic congestion increases. Once that occurs, eastbound and westbound traffic will be restricted to major intersections including Louisiana Avenue, Mississippi Avenue, Kentucky Avenue, Alameda Avenue and US 6.

Any violations which pose a safety risk will be strictly enforced by police.
