FOUNTAIN, Colo. — An archaeologist determined the remains of a young girl found at a construction site in Fountain are those of a Narive American and may be hundreds of years old to several thousands of years old. State Archaeologist Thomas Carr said Friday it appeared the girl, 12 to 16 years old, received a proper burial on the land.

Engineers at a construction site found the remains Thursday the Fountain Police Department said.

The discovery happened in the Ventana subdivision of the 10000 block of Old Pueblo Road.

Police said a skull could be seen on the ground near where it was found. The person who found it told police he removed it to see what it was and then put it back near where he found it.

Fountain Police said the state archaeologist recovered the remains.

“The remains have been transferred to the History Colorado Center for further investigation and tribal consultation,” a statement from the state archaeologist said. “The ultimate goal will be repatriation to the appropriate Native American tribe or tribes for reburial.”
